Strangely, I did not experience the Excel crash on my MacBook Air - while I did see the issue with Helvetica Neue in Word there as well. Suitcase Fusion is described as Manage all of your fonts from one source, no matter how many you haveincluding your system fonts, purchased fonts, fonts synced from Adobe Typekit, Google Fonts, and more. However, resolving font conflicts also resolved the issues I was experiencing and now Excel is working again. This was never the case before and none of my other programs has displayed an issue. One reason why the new program can’t access the font vault is data corruption. Verify if Suitcase Fusion.fontvault is not missing. Open your file manager then navigate to /Users/kbeck/Library/Extensis/Suitcase Fusion/Suitcase Fusion.fontvault. So somehow either Catalina or Office under Catalina has become very temperamental about fonts. You should check if the font vault is not missing in the said location.

I have since completely rebuild my font database and cleaned out all duplicates and conflicts that FontDoctor and FontExplorer X Pro were able to identify and things seem to be running now. I went into FontExplorer X Pro - my font manager - and disabled Helvetica Neue and hey presto: suddenly Excel started up. Just an empty space in the drop down menu. Features like Quick Match (to find similar fonts in your collection that match the selected font), Fontspiration for viewing cool designs using a wide variety of fonts, and the ability to print font specimen pages all make for a strong foundation for Suitcase Fusion. Adding, auto-activating and organizing fonts is a breeze. I noticed that there were a number of other fonts that also became invisible with this version of Word in Catalina. Suitcase Fusion 7 is an evolution of an already fantastic font manager. I noticed that in Word, the font Helvetica Neue would not display on screen and also just be a blank empty space in the drop down font menu. Easy font discovery - Quickly find the right font for the job with browse and search options and customizable font previews of your collection. I have been able to get things running however by identifying a different solution - I hope that may be helpful to others.
